Many of the front doors you see in the UK take their key design notes from different periods of history, reflecting the fashion and character of that particular era. Edwardian doors are a prime example of such a design and there are literally thousands of original and replica Edwardian doors that can be found on both new and old properties today. And it happens to be one of our favourite styles here at Secure House!
So, what is an Edwardian door and why are they still so popular with homeowners.
Marked by the death of Queen Victoria in January 1901 and covering the years from 1901 to 1910 when Edward VII was on the throne, the Edwardian era of British history is epitomised by a sense of renewed awareness and improvement for a large percentage of the population.
During this short lived period of just nine years, more and more people in Edwardian Britain became more aware of politics and there were many notable liberal reforms including the emergence of the modern welfare state.
This post-Victorian period of history is also heralded for its steer towards elegance, opulence and luxury, particularly among the British upper classes.
The overarching trend towards these traits of luxurious elegance and lavishness were clearly reflected in the conception of a new style of door.
Moving on from Victorian doors of the previous era, Edwardian front doors can be easily distinguished by their truly ornate, extravagant design and distinct door panels that take inspiration from the distinct grandeur that was born in the Victorian period.
More often than not, an Edwardian door can be distinguished by the number of panels it incorporates. An Edwardian door will include a minimum of four panels. These stained glass panels can be various sizes and shapes such as rectangular or square or a mix of the two shapes.
This move toward a more elaborate design also signalled the increasingly common inclusion of glazed or glass panels, something that had hitherto not been at all common place in doors.
These stained glass panels, which were often curved rather than rectangular, were regularly added in the upper half of a typical Edwardian door. It was at this time that highly decorative, elaborate, and multiple-glazed panels became very desirable amongst the discerning homeowner of the day. It was widely regarded that such an addition created an extra layer of luxury to these already stunning and sought-after doors.
As well as a move towards the inclusion of stained glass panes, highly intricate mouldings and aprons were a common statement addition to the overall Edwardian door design of the day. The whole idea behind this was to create interest and intrigue and, ultimately, to turn heads. We’ve always been strong advocates of creating kerb appeal here at Secure House, so this is a trend that we fully appreciate and celebrate!
It’s the question we’re always asked when it comes to any style of door but we can honestly say that traditional doors, such as an Edwardian door, remain very popular and they will always enhance the majority of styles of property thanks to their timeless, classic designs with often feature glazed glass finishes.
Anything but dull and uninspiring, an Edwardian door will facilitate the addition of a touch of timeless elegance to your home whether it’s a new build or a modern property, a traditional Edwardian terraced home or even a property located in conservation or heritage areas. And yes, if you have an original Edwardian door that’s seen better days and you’d like to change it for the exact same door, not a problem.
You love the door but it needs replacing with one that is highly secure and meets modern standard? We are able to create replica Edwardian doors to any bespoke design or requirements to meet planning demands. Just ask us!

Polished brass is the traditional choice for an Edwardian door, but many people prefer polished steel or brushed silver. It’s safe to say that either colour or finish will look incredible – it’s simply down to individual preference and we’re happy to advise.
We don’t really have to mention that home security has come a very long way since Edwardian times! Rather than traditional single locks, every door we design and manufacture will feature a multi-point locking system that can be upgraded to include a fingerprint or facial recognition system as budget allows.
Such systems can be an integral part of any Edwardian door and will perfectly complement the design without being obtrusive.
