Over the last few years, we have noticed a significant increase in the number of clients wanting to include or add a panic room or safe room to their home or new build property. Why? Well, a panic room or safe room ensures that a house offers the very highest level of security and is the ideal complement to installed security doors and windows throughout.
Protecting your home from burglars is one thing, but what if an intruder does manage to gain access? What would you do in the event of a burglary or home invasion? The answer is to seek refuge in a panic room or safe room, a place where you (and your family) can remain safe and secure while you wait for the police or security services to attend.
At Secure House, we specialise in transforming and installing various safe room solutions for households in discreet locations. Whether it’s a bedroom, bathroom, living room or perhaps a wardrobe that needs to be transformed, we are the perfect team to rely on for a safe room shelter solution in the face of danger.
How to choose a panic room or safe room?
There are many different options when it comes to the inclusion of a panic room or safe room in a home and, believe it or not, this is not a difficult project to do if it is planned and executed by professionals such as our security experts here at Secure House.
Typically, 3 key areas of security are to be considered here:
- Structural room components – This means your walls, floor and ceiling areas. In order to develop the best possible safe room scenario one should consider that all of these components are sturdy and protective enough, yet don’t add too much complexity in terms of weight. At Secure House, we offer reinforced protection for rooms in terms of steel panels which provide significant safety, but don’t hinder the weight or the practicality of the room.
- Doors and window elements – A proper set of safe room doors are a key addition to your stronghold. All of our offered variants of different security levels feature sturdy steel frames and cores that come with a multi-locking system, adding to the reinforcement and safety of the room. For those that have a need for special internal security doors, we can also include a bulletproof door and window option. All of them are matched to the rest of the interior colour and style as well to make their additions seamless.
- Monitoring and alertness systems – naturally, safe rooms are often created not only as personal security spaces for a short period of time, but as shelters with an intent to provide the occupants with every amenity they might need until help arrives.
This may include food and water sources, alternative lighting methods if the power runs out, but most importantly – communication and monitoring systems that will help you to see what’s going on elsewhere in your home and allow you to contact emergency services in no time. At Secure House, we help install these solutions in panic rooms as well.
First of all, if you’re considering creating a panic room in an existing property, we recommend carrying out a site visit before to discuss the best possible location for your panic room – this may not be where you first think. Choosing the correct location is extremely important to ensure maximum effectiveness of your solution.
In the middle of the house, somewhere that can easily be reached from everywhere in the property is often the ideal choice. A children’s bedroom is also a room to consider as intruders simply wouldn’t think that a panic room would be situated here.
And again, don’t worry if the room you choose has windows. Our fully tailored, bespoke solutions can accommodate this, and we would always swap out the windows for high security ones. We can even include bullet proof glazing.
What are the key aspects of safe rooms?
The core of our panic rooms is usually made from special steel beams which enhance the strength of the shelter itself including its walls, flooring and ceiling components. Since adding enhancing materials contributes to the increased weight of the whole room, we often suggest either creating or reformatting an existing room in a home on the first floor for maximum effectiveness.
Next, of course, comes your set of security doors which further contribute to the impenetrability of the shelter. Again, steel is most often used as the core material here, with a double layer being quite the popular choice for panic rooms.
In terms of locking, we highly recommend using a heavy deadbolt. While it may seem unnecessary at first, this is the best way to ensure that it is impossible to enter the room from the outside. The lock itself, of course, should be located only on the inside, so when you and your family members enter the stronghold the door closes for good, until it’s safe to come out to the outside world.
In addition, there’s the livability aspect of your safe room to consider as well. In most cases of a potential hazard, you and your family members will have to get to the shelter immediately, which means little to no preparation time. The room should not only be properly enhanced, but also provide you with the basic necessities while it’s impossible to leave safety.
This may include a source of water, food items, a toilet, at least basic bedding and something to provide a bit of light even if there’s no power. Again, it may seem unnecessary at first, but you can think of it as an insurance policy in the case that you’ll need to be there for an extended period of time.
Finally, there’s the aspect of communications equipment inside a safe room. In most cases, you will need to retreat to the shelter in a hurry, not always having a communications device on hand. A panic room should include the means to contact the emergency services as well as a monitoring system intended to help you see what’s going on in other parts of the house.
Why a discreet or ‘hidden’ panic room is a must
If you don’t want to (or don’t have the space) to devote an entire room to being used as a panic room or safe room, a discreet or ‘hidden’ panic room can be retrofitted in almost any room.
The primary use for the room can be, for example, a walk-in wardrobe or changing room but its secondary use can be as a panic room. By adding highly secure steel wall panels and a high security or bullet proof door, the wardrobe can double up as a panic room in the event of a successful home invasion.
It’s worth mentioning that steel wall panels can be fitted to any existing room, irrespective of size or shape or the specific angles of a secure room, such as an older property that may not have straight, true walls. As such, a truly bespoke panic room can be created in any area of a property.
What’s more, the steel panels aren’t too thick, so the room is never significantly narrowed or made smaller by this addition, plus it’s impossible to tell the panels have even been fitted once they have been plastered and decorated.
Types of panic room doors
At Secure House, we offer and design custom safe room doors to go along with the highest security standards needed for proper safe rooms.
Our team of security experts and engineers realise that such solutions not only have to offer ballistic security, but must work seamlessly within the interior, in order to be indistinguishable for the unknowing eye.
A proper safe room door that’s not only completely secure but hidden as well, luckily, is becoming the new safety standard within the home security industry.
Whether it’s a commercial or residential location we’re talking about, such a solution is much more effective in protecting your loved ones as well as your most valuable possessions from break ins and other threats, when compared to a typical vault door that’s easily visible.
Here are the most common types of safe room doors that we offer and work with.
Sliding security doors
The world’s most luxurious panic rooms will often include a sliding security door. As specialists in sliding security doors, we can both design and manufacture a bespoke, fully automated security sliding door that facilitates quick and easy access to the panic room at any time.
We are also able to create a completely bullet proof sliding security door for total all-round protection from handguns to automatic weapons.
Garage security doors
Quite often, an automobile is the most valuable asset within a household. While protecting yourself and your family is of course, the highest priority, having a well-built safe room door for your garage can work effectively in preventing the theft of your vehicle.
Simply having a door with more complex locking mechanisms may not be enough if encountering a break in involving experienced burglars that have the sophisticated tools to counter that. Our team can provide you with an enhanced side hinged, sectional or types of garage security doors.
Bullet-proof safe room doors
For some persons that occupy important governmental or corporate positions, there might be a risk of not only a break in, but a serious attempt on one’s life as well. That’s why a bullet resistant safe door solution can be just the right choice in this case.
When compared to a standard door solution, such a solution is manufactured from much stronger materials allowing additional safety and physical security either when already hiding in a safe room or acting as a first means of defence at the front door.
Our bullet resistant door solutions come with standard protection from 9mm bullets.
Communal entrance security doors
Those looking to protect their office or residential area building will also look for a solution that’s much more sturdy and robust compared to a standard door. With such a door set, you can be sure that your property and valuables will be well-protected at all times.
Our team focused on design, preparation and installment of such doors. Whether you are looking for a more traditional or perhaps even a luxurious solution, we can help you find the best option.
