What is an embassy?

Any embassy is the base for a country’s diplomatic mission abroad. An embassy will oversee and cultivate political, cultural and social relationships in country and will usually be home to the ambassador of the country it is representing. Its purpose is to assist the citizens of its home country who may be living, working of travelling overseas. As such, embassies are very important buildings and often to need to afford both safety and security very quickly and efficiently.

What is an embassy door?

Most embassies will feature several entrances, each of which will have a variety of security measures as demanded by the ambassador. Each entrance will require a very high security door and these are often bulletproof to provide protection from any potential attack or attempt to gain unlawful entry into to the embassy building itself.

An embassy door can be constructed from several different types of material all of which will have been selected for their strength and durability and the technical properties they can deliver when combined.

Embassy doors of the very highest standards

Using various heavy-duty tools, including hammers and axes, to penetrate the door and break in, our embassy level doors could not be opened for nearly an hour! That’s the level of protection we strive to provide.

But don’t just take our word for it, please take a look at one of the videos from the testing that features on our YouTube channel:

All of our embassy level doors have passed a variety of forced entry tests and they all meet the US Department of State Diplomatic Security Forced Entry and Resistance of Structural standard. In order to pass and achieve such rigorous standards, each door has undergone a sustained, simulated attack from at least two men.

Art Deco Windows & Doors. What’s your favourite home style?

New build, modern homes are great but there are three distinctive styles of classical architecture here in the UK that epitomise grand periods of history, conjuring up images of time gone by. So, if you’re a fan of older properties, what’s your favourite classical home style – is it Edwardian, Georgian or Victorian?

Each of the three periods has its own distinctive, yet subtle, characteristics and homes pertaining to each style can be found in many of our big cities and towns with some displaying some prime examples. Let’s look at some of the key features of each and share some our own favourite door designs that are available from Secure House and reflect all the iconic designs for each era.

“And the law of England has so particular and tender a regard to the immunity of a man’s house, that it stiles it his castle, and will never suffer it to be violated with immunity.”*

Georgian style

The Georgian period occurred from around 1710 to 1830. It gets its name from the fact that no less than four British kings named George reigned during this time. London and the Cotswolds both have a wide variety of beautiful examples of Georgian homes. Walk around Regent’s Park in the capital and visit Lansdown Crescent in Bath and take a step back in time to imagine what life was like in these luxurious homes.

Everything about Georgian houses is big and generous. Huge floor to ceiling, symmetrical Art Deco windows and a fan window over the door will give this style away. Think grand, think scale, think spacious, think light & airy, these homes are some of the most popular amongst buyers according to estate agents, us Brits love their grandeur, columns and clean lines.

Here are some examples of some Georgian-style doors:

Victorian style

Dating from 1830 to 1900 in line with the time Queen Victoria was on the throne, Victorian style encompasses several of the features associated with Georgian style, namely large columns and symmetry. It is, however, the addition of renaissance and Gothic touches that underline Victorian architecture.

From pointed or arched Art Deco windows, porches and doors with wooden trim on roof edges, to the use of iron and glass and intricate interior design and decoration, the Victorian style is a little more complex and detailed than its Georgian predecessor.

Edwardian style

Influenced by the Arts & Crafts movement of the 1900s, Edwardian architecture was at its height from 1901 to 1918 during the reign of King Edward VII.

During the early 1900s, Britain began to experience further industrialisation and the general population began to increase which demanded a new housing stock extending out of the towns and cities. Thus, the Edwardian style house was born and heralded a new era which was greener than ever before.

Perhaps one of the easiest ways to spot an Edwardian house is from its beautiful bay and sash Art Deco windows, a look that is desired and recreated by many homeowners today. Smaller than Georgian and Victorian homes, columns continue to be a specific feature, but timber-cladding is part of the style now rather than full brick and doors and Art Deco windows often also include smaller panes of glass for the first time.

1920s and 1930s style doors

Back in 1910 when Edwardian style was at its height, the Art Deco period began. Bold, straight lines, symmetrical boxes, mirrors and striking design touches such as arched glazed panels with stained glass inlets, Art Deco was and still an extremely popular interior and exterior home decorating choice.

Art Deco front doors are timeless classics and are often selected for homes in conservation areas as well as more modern properties, they are hugely versatile and will complement any property.

Black double security door with the most incredible gargoyle door knockers

Your house, your door, your design – get inspired!

If you’re anything like us, you’re probably very eager to travel right now and see some different sights after over two months of lockdown. So, we thought we’d take you on virtual tour of Malta via some of its truly stunning doors (you know how much we love doors!) captured by our MD when he travelled there back in 2019 with his family. We hope the images will inspire you and, don’t forget, if you see something you like, let us know and we’ll recreate it for you.

We’re experts at creating bespoke doors because it’s your house so it should be your door, your design! Take a look at the wide variety of different colours the homeowners on Malta have chosen for their doors. They’re vibrant, bright and very welcoming. And there’s a definite trend here in the UK to coloured doors, something little different to the classic black or white doors.

Take a look at the wide variety of different colours

We’re working with more and more clients who have a specific colour in mind when it comes to replacing an existing door or, indeed, installing doors in a new build or refurbishment project. Sometimes they wish to match a rendered finish or pick out a colour that is used inside the home, or simply because it’s their favourite colour! Either way, we can accommodate those wishes which is why so many people choose Secure House.

Back to Malta

One of the best things about going on holiday of course is exploring the location. Merely by walking through the streets of a town or village, you can get a real feel for the people who live there and the culture of the country. We noticed that there is a real passion for door knockers over in Malta. And sometimes it wasn’t just one, but two knockers included on each door set. The designs are incredible – take a look below – and the detail is truly beautiful. What’s more, they more than complement the doors and serve a purpose too, you don’t ever want to miss a parcel or delivery because you don’t hear someone knocking at your door do you?

In fact, by looking at the hundreds of different doors, we could clearly see that the Maltese people love their door furniture, so much so that they even have a dedicated ironmongery museum which kept our MD and his family entertained for over an hour! From owls and seahorse, to gargoyles and traditional brass rings, the Maltese have a door knocker for every possible door design.

Maybe it’s time to bring a few rays of Maltese sunshine into your home?

As with the door designs, styles and colours, if you spot a piece of ironmongery included on any of the photos that you like, let us know and we’ll make it happen! You should never have to compromise on design or security when it comes to selecting new doors for your home so we’re here to help with everything from a bespoke colour to a unique, one-of-a-kind design.

We really hope this particular blog post inspires you and gives you a few ideas for your very own grand door design.

Christmas card

Protect your home from thieves when it’s unoccupied

According to the Office for National Statistics, 59% of intruders gained entry to a targeted property via the front door with 70% of all domestic burglaries taking place during the week. Add to these figures the fact that the risk of burglary doubles in the run up to and over Christmas and you realise there’s never been a better time to protect your home, especially when it’s unoccupied.

These figures, unfortunately, come as no surprise to us. We have lost count of how many calls we’ve received from distraught homeowners who have been burgled whilst at work on a Monday afternoon or the properties we’ve visited after Christmas where the front door has not withstood an attack and the home has been ransacked by thieves. That’s the worst part of our job.

Increasing the security in and around your home in as many different ways as possible

The good news is, here at Secure House, we know exactly how to get get one step ahead of the burglars and remain there. This means increasing the security in and around your home in as many different ways as possible.

As homeowners ourselves, our main objective is to ensure that our family and our possessions are as safe and secure as possible and the first place to start is by replacing windows and doors with security windows and doors.

Our products offer enhanced home protection and security

We have a huge range of the very highest quality security doors and windows to choose from. Not only do each and every one of our products offer enhanced home protection and security, they also look stunning and are specifically designed to secure your home and complement its individual style and character at the same time. People often think that a secure window or door will be ugly and purely functional. That’s definitely not the case with our products!

With a modest investment, it is possible to manufacture and install a bespoke or off-the-shelf security front door and we would also recommend replacing any back or side doors with a matching security door for all round protection. Adding security windows and even security shutters should also be considered if budgets allow.

Adding security front, side and back doors and windows to any home will make all the difference when it comes to improving residential safety and security. They will also completely transform the aesthetics of a property and add value. But, most importantly, they will ensure that burglars remain on the outside of your property where they belong!

The brand new, replica conservation area door that Secure House created

Your number One choice for area conservation doors

Secure House: your number one choice for London area conservation doors. Over the last few years, we have worked with a large number of clients based in several of London’s ‘conservation areas’ including Chelsea, Kensington, Belgravia, Mayfair and Westminster. As specialists in the replication of traditional timber doors right down to the finest detail, we’ve become the number one choice for conservation doors for properties across central London.

The best way to show you our expertise in this area is to showcase some of our recent projects, starting with this traditional timber Georgian-style door with beautiful panel and stud detail.

BEFORE

The original conservation area door that Secure House were tasked with replacing

Located in Kensington, this property is over 100 years old and is part of a Grade 1 listed building. As such, we had to ensure that the replica door creating a replica, met a variety of strict conservation area regulations.

The existing traditional timber door was over 100 years old and only had standard locks. The property owner wanted to fully maintain the original timber feel as well as keeping the arched window light over the top of the door.

So, we manufactured a brand new door made from steel which was clad with certified engineered wood which is completely waterproof, weatherproof and requires zero maintenance. We also created a brand new window light using high security glass. Everything matched and we further brought the old to meet the new by adding a fully motorised lock complete with smart connectivity.

By far the toughest challenge was to get the door approved by both Westminster Council and Grosvenor Estates. But that’s exactly what we achieved.

The new door actually surpassed current building regulations on thermal efficiency and security. And that’s not unusual. In fact, every conservation or heritage door we design, manufacture and install always surpasses the requirements; we like to go the extra mile whenever we can.

AFTER

The brand new, replica conservation area door that Secure House created

So, when if you live in one of London’s beautiful conservation areas or your home is a listed building and you’re looking for replica doors, Secure House is your number one choice!

Secure House Door Designs

Flush doors

When it comes to design and architecture, there are always new trends to inspire and motivate us and it’s no different when it comes to security door design. That latest trend in the UK door industry is for flush doors.

Here at Secure House, we’ve noticed this contemporary development for a few months now and we’ve had clients specifically ask for flush doors – not a problem! We’re keen to embrace any new design styles and broaden our extensive portfolio wherever we can. That’s one of the reasons why we’ve put together this blog post that to explain all about flush doors, there uses and how they can be added to any home or building project.

What is a flush door?

A flush door embraces a very straightforward style of door design. They typically have a plain facing panel either side of the door that allows a completely flush fit to the door frame. Flush doors are mainly used in the interior of a home and provide a very functional option especially, where there isn’t much available space. As such, they make very handy ‘space saver’ doors which makes them an ideal choice in smaller properties and apartments as well as smaller rooms in a house like the bathroom.

Simple, stylish and functional

When it comes to the design of a flush door, they are usually quite simple but that doesn’t mean they can’t be stylish as well as functional; far from it. There are also three different types of construction that are commonly used in flush doors. They can be hollow, solid or feature a stave core. Solid flush doors are an excellent alternative for exterior doors as they offer a good deal of strength as well as a good level of insulation. Used in an interior setting, they can work as a great separating door between two rooms or a hallway.

The fact that a flush door will deliver a flush surface facilitates the opportunity for it to be used to create an understairs cupboard or WC as it can also be mounted on tracks as well as traditionally hinged. Another space saving feature of flush doors!

Made to measure for your home

Black horizontal line flush door with bespoke ironmongeryWe are able to manufacture flush doors that have either an inward or outward opening. Aperture size can be accommodated too so there is the choice of single or door flush doors. We can even include side panel windows where the exterior line fits flush with the window trims. As with almost every Secure House door, flush doors can be made to measure your home to suit your individual requirements.

These ultra-modern doors have the potential to truly transform the whole look of your home. And, as you would expect from Secure House, any of these modern doors can include a motorised locking system, a fingerprint scanner as well as bespoke ironmongery to perfectly complement the door.

And, of course, all of our flush doors are made using only the very highest quality steel and engineered timber to provide unrivalled security and energy efficiency throughout.

Finding the perfect door for your existing property, refurbishment or new build home isn’t always easy. That’s one of the reasons that we’ve always offered a bespoke door design and manufacture service so you can create the doors of your dreams – just like this Art Deco door we have made and installed for a residential client who has built a brand new house.

One of the top priorities – security

We worked closely with the client and architect before the build even began, that way we were able to advise and consult to ensure the finished door would exceed expectations. Once a design was agreed, we collected the precise measurements and drafted final drawings for our workshop team.

One of the top priorities was, of course, security. Since the door design was predominantly glass, we selected the very highest level security glazing and then added the feature Art Deco circles in powder coated ‘ecru’ – another bespoke colour – to match the door frame and windows.

totally secure, inside and out

Simply stunning and totally secure, inside and out!

We’ve recently completed a simply stunning full house project that saw the Secure House team work alongside a client to help them create their dream home with a variety of exterior and interior doors.

Overview

Located in the south of England, this luxurious new build property is a real stunner. The owner contacted us after being inspired by our Pinterest and Instagram feed. She wanted to create a real bespoke feel for the property but ensure complete security at the same time. Not a problem.

Liaising with the client, architect and developer, we created several designs for security doors for the front and back door, both featuring hand-made ironmongery to add that extra special touch.

We then discussed the client’s requirements for the internal doors. A bespoke walnut veneer was a firm favourite, so we set to work designing and manufacturing multiple sets of doors, including several doubles.

Project

The front door features a horizontal, wood-effect finish with an oversize aluminium handle and side-glazed panel including security glass. Only the very highest quality materials were used to provide all of the protection associated with a high security door from Secure House.

The front door
The front door

The back door is exactly the same design but the client chose the colour artic white to further enhance the bright, clean white render used to cover the property.

The back door
The back door

The property also features several sets of sliding doors to open up the home to the fabulous, landscaped gardens that surround it. Each set of doors offers unrivalled security with burglar resistant glazing and multipoint locking systems. The super slimline frames allow the maximum amount of light into the property when closed and perfectly match the security windows installed throughout.

Heading inside, the bespoke walnut veneer internal doors are a striking addition to each of the rooms in the house. A mix of panel and glazed doors each with the same opulent black and silver inset veneers are a key design element as well and being highly functional to create the very best living space for the family.

Finally, the client had originally wanted to include a panic room within the property in order to create a safe and secure space to seek refuge in the event of home invasion, but also to store valuables when they weren’t in the property.

Having created many panic rooms over the years, this wasn’t a problem for us and we were able to manufacture a high security vault door which exactly matched all the other interior doors. This door was fitted to the area and now provides a safe haven for the client and their family.

Not only did we exceed the client’s expectations on this project, but the client has also told us that she has received multiple complements on the doors we designed and installed from anyone visiting the property. That makes us very proud!
